Quick answer
What is the best place to start?
For an approachable online crossword, start Mini Crossword on Easy and choose a familiar theme such as In the Kitchen or Garden. Easy provides starting letters, checks letters as you type, and offers unlimited hints. You can play free in your browser without ads, a download, or an account.
- Small 5×5 grids with short words
- Large letters and an on-screen keyboard
- Eight themes with everyday clues
- No countdown or lives to lose
Which Mini Crossword difficulty should you choose?
All three levels use a 5×5 grid. The difference is how much help you receive, so experienced crossword fans can enjoy a challenge too.
| Level | Starting letters and checking | Hints per puzzle | A good choice when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Easy | Starting letters are supplied; each typed letter is checked | Unlimited | You want plenty of support or are learning the controls |
| Medium | No starting letters; a word is checked when filled | 5 | You enjoy solving clues with a little help available |
| Hard | No starting letters; use Check puzzle to check answers | 3 | You prefer to work through the crossword independently |
What is a mini crossword?
A mini crossword uses the same Across and Down clues as a traditional crossword, in a much smaller grid. BrainFunHub’s version has about ten short words, usually three to five letters long. Each shared square belongs to both an Across word and a Down word, so solving one clue gives you letters for another.
A small grid can make it easier to keep track of your answers and enjoy a short puzzle break. Small does not always mean easy: a clue may still make you pause. Choose the level of help that makes solving enjoyable for you.
How to play your first Mini Crossword
Open Mini Crossword, choose Easy, Medium, or Hard, then pick a theme. Tap a square or a clue to select a word. Read the highlighted clue and type your answer using the on-screen keyboard on a phone or tablet, or your physical keyboard on a computer.
Across answers run left to right; Down answers run top to bottom. Tap the same square again to switch direction. Use the clue arrows to move between unfinished words, or select another clue directly. An amber letter means you can try a different letter by typing over it.
If you get stuck, select the word you want help with and use Reveal letter or Reveal word. Easy has unlimited hints; Medium has five and Hard has three per puzzle. On Hard, use Check puzzle when you want feedback. There is no countdown, so take as long as you like.
Choose a crossword theme you enjoy
Mini Crossword has eight themes: Around the House, In the Kitchen, Garden, Animals, Weather & Seasons, Travel, Music, and Remember When. Each combines themed answers with everyday crossing words, using plain clues rather than cryptic wordplay.
Start with a subject you like. A keen gardener might choose Garden, while a music lover might enjoy Music. Remember When can be a pleasant starting point for sharing stories while you solve. You can return for another puzzle whenever you feel like a crossword break.
Simple solving tips for crossword lovers
Begin with a clue you recognize rather than working through the list in order. Count the squares before typing: a three-letter answer needs a three-letter word. If the clue is about something you drink from and you have C _ P, those crossing letters may help you think of CUP.
Use a solved word to revisit the clues that cross it. When an answer does not fit, consider another everyday word with the same meaning. Read the clue aloud, move to a different word, or reveal one letter if you would like a nudge. Hints are there to help you keep enjoying the puzzle.
Make crossword time comfortable and social
Choose a screen that feels comfortable to read. A tablet or computer may be easier than a small phone if you want more room for the grid and clues. Try Easy first if tapping or typing is unfamiliar, and take a break if your eyes or hands feel tired.
For shared play, one person can read the clues while another enters the answers. Offer a clue or a choice of two possible words when asked, and let the person solving decide when to use a hint. A single completed word can be a satisfying stopping point.
Crosswords offer an enjoyable way to practice vocabulary, spelling, and word recall. They are a leisure activity, and playing them does not guarantee better memory or prevent dementia. Choose puzzles for enjoyment and adjust the support to the individual.
Online mini crosswords or large-print paper puzzles?
Online Mini Crossword lets you change letters easily and ask for a hint without finding an answer sheet. It suits a quick puzzle break on a computer, tablet, or phone. If you prefer a pencil, choose a large-print paper crossword with clear clues, well-spaced squares, and a readable answer key.
Mini Crossword is an online game and does not include a print or PDF download option. For screen-free activities, browse BrainFunHub’s separate printable collection and choose a crossword or another word puzzle that matches your interests.
