Falls are the number one cause of injury — and injury-related death — for adults over 65. The good news is that many falls are preventable with simple home modifications and smart habits.
Bathroom (Highest Risk Area)
- 1.Install grab bars next to the toilet and in the shower or tub
- 1.Use a non-slip bath mat inside the tub and on the bathroom floor
- 1.Consider a shower chair or bench for stability
- 1.Install a raised toilet seat if getting up is difficult
- 1.Make sure the bathroom has bright, even lighting
Kitchen
- 1.Store frequently used items on lower shelves (avoid step stools)
- 1.Clean up spills immediately
- 1.Use non-slip rugs in front of the sink and stove
- 1.Make sure lighting is bright over work areas
Living Areas
- 1.Remove or secure loose rugs with double-sided tape
- 1.Keep walking paths clear of clutter, cords, and furniture
- 1.Ensure furniture is sturdy enough to lean on for support
- 1.Add lighting so hallways and rooms are well-lit, especially at night
Bedroom
- 1.Place a lamp and phone within reach of the bed
- 1.Use nightlights along the path from bed to bathroom
- 1.Make sure the bed height allows easy getting in and out
- 1.Keep floors clear of shoes, clothing, and other tripping hazards
Stairs and Entryways
- 1.Install handrails on both sides of all staircases
- 1.Make sure steps are even, in good repair, and have non-slip treads
- 1.Add motion-sensor lights at entries and along outdoor walkways
Beyond the Home
- ✓Encourage regular eye exams (poor vision increases fall risk)
- ✓Review medications with a doctor (some cause dizziness or balance problems)
- ✓Encourage daily balance and strength exercises (even chair exercises help)
- ✓Consider a personal emergency response system ("I've fallen and I can't get up" devices)
